Playboy looks to wireless gambling

Playboy, the US media group that recently announced an expected profit from its e-gaming division, is looking to wireless devices to broaden the scope of its gambling offerings.

According to a report on, Playboy chairman and CEO Christie Hefner hinted at a new wireless deal at the recent FT New Media and Broadcasting conference in London.

'We are very interested in this space. I had hoped to announce something today, but we haven't quite finished the deal,' she said at the conference.

The new deal is likely to involve gaming over next generation mobile phones, an area that Ms Hefner has identified as a strong growth opportunity for the company. Last year Playboy signed a deal with Finnish company Wireless Entertainment Services, to provide adult content over mobile phones on pay-per-download basis.

According to FT New Media, a soft launch of a Korean Playboy site is in progress. Two more local sites will be launched in 2002, but no date has been given. The company plans to launch local sites at the rate of two a year in subsequent years.

Overall, Ms Hefner stressed, Playboy’s internet operations are expected to reach profitability at some point this year, and the company as a whole is expected to be profitable at an operating level in 2002.
