|A million pound (US$1,415,527) UK based poker game has been postponed because it may break the law, this according to a report by Ananova.com.|
Scotland Yard (the UK police headquarters) called for a halt to the Poker Million game in London less than three weeks before it was due to begin. The reasoning behind the police action is that the event is to be staged in a hotel rather than a casino – which would potentially be a breach of UK licensing laws.
Metropolitan Police lawyers and the organisers, Poker Million Ltd - a joint venture between Ladbrokes' internet division and boxing promoter Barry Hearn's Matchroom Sport - are waiting to see whether the game can take place at all. There is a precedent for a million-pound poker game in the UK – a million pound game has been played in the UK before but it was in the Isle of Man, where there licensing and gambling laws are looser than on the mainland.
