|The days of inequality at the All England Lawn Tennis Club may be numbered. This year Gamebookers, an online sportsbook, has thrown an extra £30,000 into the Femaleís Singles winnerís prize fund as to equal that of the Menís Singles.|
Gamebookers view tennis as their second biggest market (behind football) and are keen to promote their involvement in the sport. The £30,000 set aside will make up the shortfall to take womenís prize money to £655,000, equal to that of the Menís competition.
Luke Brill, Global Marketing Director, said, ďWe were amazed that Wimbledon should take such an outdated view on equal prize money. The possibility of action by womenís tennis players could devalue the quality and enjoyment of the tournament for all. There is little we can do to influence policy decisions of the organizers, however if we can redress the pay balance then itís possible we can keep the Womenís competition truly competitive.Ē
