|Many online casinos and sportsbooks offer a link to gamblers anonymous, but the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia, has gone one better: it has become the first casino to offer free, in-house, 24 hour counseling to customers with gambling problems. |
Crown’s customer support center, staffed by psychologists specializing in problem gambling opened last Wednesday, attracting a few clients. In a report from the Australian Herald Sun, Crown spokesperson Gary O’ Neill said the casino now has a better way of dealing with problem gambling than through government reforms: 'In the long run, the only effective way to address this particular issue is through the provision of counseling services brought to people when they need them, where they need them.”
The center’s psychologists will also counsel gaming staff affected by distressed addicts. Welfare agencies such as the Salvation Army support Crown’s program, describing it as a welcome initiative in the fight against gambling addiction. 'The best place for people to finally acknowledge they have a problem is in the place where they obviously enjoy coming,' said Salvation Army communications director John Dalziel.
