Hong Kong Government Proposing to Ban Internet Gambling
By Earl
The Sing Tao newspaper reports that ‘Online betting and bookmaking could be outlawed and included in gambling law, if proposals suggested by government officials in the Legislative Council yesterday are adopted.’ In discussions held April 2, it was proposed that off-shore bookmaking be made illegal as well. Stephen Fisher, Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs, said that, ‘Under the proposed law change, any local citizens involved in betting or bookmaking activities on the Internet would be breaking the law.’ Even existing, legal off-shore bookmaking companies would face prosecution if accepting bets through the Internet from players in Hong Kong.

But Fisher said the Hong Kong authorities had no intention of snooping on the activities of people on the Internet. ‘We will mainly focus on illegal bookmaking groups, rather than particular online betting activities by individuals,’ the Deputy Secretary said.
