NEWSFLASH: US Senate Moves to Outlaw Online Gaming
By Joe M
The online gaming industry is in turmoil after the United States Senate passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act this weekend. The move, which came as a surprise to some analysts, is likely to cause chaos in an industry already nervous following the arrests of David Carruthers and Peter Dicks over sports betting allegations.

The bill was attached to the Maritime Port and Security Bill after one of its main proponent, Republican Senator Bill Frist, failed to attach it to a bill on funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

'Congress has grappled with this issue for 10 years and during that time we have watched this shadow industry explode,' said Bill Frist, also Senate Majority Leader.

'For me as majority leader, the bottom line is simple. Internet gambling is illegal.'

It only now requires President George W Bush to sign it into law, a move that seems likely, seeing as it will help shore up his conservative base for upcoming midterm elections that his Republican party are likely to lose.
