“Big Game” jackpot hits $300 million

Nobody won the $220 million jackpot in last Friday’s multistate “Big Game” lottery in the US, leaving a rollover jackpot estimated at $300 million, lottery officials said on Saturday.

Without a winner, the jackpot has been growing for nine weeks now, and millions jammed newstands, drugstores and gas stations in the seven participating US states, with queues lengthening as many lottery terminals crashed under the pressure.

The record US lottery jackpot is $363 million, which was split between two winners two years ago. Interest mounted as the countdown to the 11 pm draw grew closer. Ticket sales tend to be stronger near state lines, where residents of states without lotteries drive to buy tickets. The players choose six numbers hoping they will match the ones picked randomly from the Big Game drum.

New Jersey played host to hordes of bettors from across the river in New York State, which has no lottery.

Tom Rosenberg, spokesman for New Jersey State Lottery Commission, said on Friday 3,000 tickets were being sold every minute in the hours leading up to the draw, with sales hitting a peak at around lunchtime.

The Big Game is played in Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey and Virginia.

The winning numbers were: 6-13-14-17-41 and Big Money Ball 6.
