|The recent alliance between Las Vegas Sands and Cantor Gaming to open an online casino to the UK market has been criticised as ‘hypocritical’ by the European Betting Association (EBA).|
Head of Public Affairs at the EBA, Torbjorn Ihre, slammed the partnership between the two parties following the introduction of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which was passed in October.
Ihre claimed, 'It's hypocrisy and discrimination. These two words fit. This proves that the US being open to competition is a false claim.'
However, Celeste Mellet Brown of Morgan Stanley countered that the agreement was a way for Las Vegas Sands to capitalise on any change in the current ban on US internet gambling.
'If Las Vegas Sands can show that it can successfully identify customers and put socially responsible policies in place, then it would be in a strong position to argue the merits of a new regulatory framework,' the analyst explained.
Las Vegas Sands CEO Bill Weidner, responded, 'As the internet gaming landscape continues to evolve, this effort will put us in a strong position to evaluate and react to other potential opportunities.'
