|The Daily News in Durban reports that a local businessman who thought it was his lucky night, after winning R70,000 (US$6,417) at the Sugarmill Casino at Mount Edgecombe, was ‘attacked by two armed men and robbed of his winnings when he arrived home.’ |
Hennie van Aswegen, 60, won at blackjack last Tuesday night. Security at the casino escorted him safely to his car, a limit that proved to be costly. When he arrived home in Glenashly, a town outside Durban, he met the two men, who had obviously followed him from the casino.
‘I put up a fight,’ said Aswegen, ‘and one of them fired a shot that just missed my head. I am lucky to be alive ... I am convinced there are people watching gamblers who have big wins, or they are being tipped off by casino staff,’ said Van Aswegen.
Belinda Jelf, Marketing Manager of Sugarmill Casino, had this to say: ‘Gamblers are encouraged to put large winnings into their Smart Card accounts, or take a cheque or even a bank transfer. It's a pity Van Aswegen opted to take the cash.’
