Slot Machines Bring Gamblers Back
By nisha
A new debate in New Mexico surrounds the introduction of slot machines at horse racing tracks. Whilst advocates claim the machines have aroused renewed interest in horse racing and consequently have saved the industry, critics are claiming that horse racing is providing cover for lucrative gambling that otherwise would be illegal. 61 year old Lonnie Barber has been involved in the horse racing industry for most of his life as an owner, trainer and breeder. He told ABQ journal the industry was so slow during the mid 1990's that he would finish as a top-10 trainer at one meet and have to borrow money to get to the next. He said this is no longer the case due to the at-track slot machines. Total payroll and the number of racing-related jobs have nearly tripled since slot machines were introduced in 1999. Whatever the truth may be, as in many cities, the debate continues over whether the bad gambling brings is cancelled out by the good, and will continue until the government decides to put an end to the ongoing speculation.
