Connecticut to Hold Gambling Awareness Week

The Connecticut Day reports that the New London County Citizens Task Force on Addictions, and state legislators from the southeastern area of the state will host Connecticut’s first Gambling Awareness Week, May 13-19, the main event being a conference on problem gambling, in Farmington, May 16. The further aim of the Week is to raise awareness in the state about problem gambling, to “explore the impact on individuals, families and the business sector, and provide a clearinghouse of information and services to state residents.”

State Representative Andrea Stillman, a Democrat representing Waterford, said, “The fact is that the problems [of gambling] have grown so dramatically since the development of the two casinos [in the state] ... Stillman on Monday was joined by her fellow representatives Kevin Ryan (D-Montville), Nancy DeMarinis (D-Groton), Gary Orefice (D-East Lyme), and State Senator Catherine W. Cook (R-Mystic). At a press conference they unveiled the awareness effort and honored Connecticut’s Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Commissioner, Thomas Kirk, “ ... for his efforts to recognize gambling as an addiction and to establish state gambling addiction services…”
