Gary Kaplan Refused Bail by US Court
By Miriam H
Gary Kaplan, the founder of online betting site BetonSports, has had his request for bail rejected by a St Louis federal court.

Kaplan, who has submitted a not guilty plea in the legal case against him, was arrested in the Dominican Republic in March on charges including racketeering and fraud.

US magistrate Mary Ann Medler said there was a danger that Kaplan would escape if released. ‘The defendant and his family have no real ties to anywhere or to any community,’ Medler said.

Former Chief Executive David Carruthers, who was also arrested almost a year ago at Dallas airport, is refuting similar indictments against him and is under house arrest until a trial date is set.

BetOnSports, which has filed for bankruptcy in the UK, pleaded guilty on May 24 to a single charge of racketeering conspiracy and is assisting prosecutors by giving evidence against Kaplan and 10 co-defendants.
