Online Clash in Sweden

Sweden's horse racing monopoly AB Trav Och Galopp (ATG) has begun legal action against the Malta licensed Unibet online gambling group surrounding allegations of illegally obtaining horse racing information.

ATG alleges that Unibet has been illicitly acquiring horse racing statistics from its database without permission since 2000. Despite protests by ATG in 2004, there has yet to be any agreement on the issue with the Swedish horse racing monopoly now asking for relief from the courts.

ATG is suing Unibet for a reported $36 million, a sum said to be ten percent of the money that Unibet has made on horse betting since it started to use information from ATG’s database.

The claim alleges that ATG invested more than $30 million in building the database and that Unibet would not have been able to provide horse race betting without the information it contains.

An ATG spokesperson said that the Stockholm-based company believes that it has a good chance of winning the case in accordance with rulings in similar cases in Sweden and the European Union.
