South Africa to Regulate Internet Gambling
By Miriam H
South Africa’s National Assembly has begun to table a series of legislative changes that could see its Internet gambling industry being subject to regulatory measures such as monitoring the fair treatment of players.

In a memorandum attached to the draft National Gambling Amendment Bill, South Africa’s online and interactive gambling market is accused of being beset by crime and offering little protection for its players.

'This situation has resulted in a considerable loss of revenue to the national fiscus and compromises the country's reputation as a responsible global citizen and the reputation of the gambling industry in general,' the memorandum says.

The new bill outlines the need for approval of interactive games, equipment and software, registration of players and the need to implement dispute resolution procedures for players.

Other provisions include the protection of minors and vulnerable people from exploitation as well as stipulating guidelines for advertising, licensing, compliance and enforcement, problem gambling, and money laundering.
