|Online gambling giant 888.com has announced that its new Italian sportsbook, its first foray into the market since gaining a license in October from Italian regulator Amministrazione Autonoma dei Monopoli di Stato (AAMS), has been launched in conjunction with Cogetech.|
Gibraltar-licensed 888.com said that Cogetech is a specialist in the Italian market and it will be restricted to sports betting with the exclusion of horseracing for the immediate future. It stated that it would also offer skill games with further products added should the Italian regulator allow.
“This is a milestone in the progression of 888’s diversified, multi-channel strategy to grow our customer reach and appeal globally,” said Gigi Levy, Chief Executive Officer for 888.com.
Levy said that the Italian sports betting market would be one of the firm's big areas of focus over the next two years as, under the influence of European lawmakers, the nation is gradually opening up its gambling market. It had originally opposed online betting but has now stated that it will allow games of skill.
There are strong rumours throughout the industry that a white label deal with Rank's Blue Square brand could be in prospect very soon as part of 888.com's ambitions to extend its sportsbetting operations further into Europe.
The Gibraltar-licensed site first hinted at its intention to become involved in the Italian market at last month’s annual European Interactive Gaming Congress and Expo (EiG) in Barcelona and stated that any deal with a provider would be for more than just one year.
