Online Prize Draws Still Subject To Offline Entry Rules
By sam
Low prices for internet access are opening avenues in all forms of internet gambling, yet online sweepstakes still require an offline form of entry, such as post or telephone. In the US California was the first state to enforce restrictions upon internet access being viewed as a ‘contribution’ towards a commercial prize draw. Under Californian law any sweepstake whereby the competition is reliant solely upon luck may not charge an entry fee. In the UK restrictions are based upon the same principle, despite a lack of actual legal action being taken either way. An online lottery in the UK would therefore be subject to the financial restrictions of free entry. Without the inherent freedom of online entry that online casinos and sports gambling sites currently offer, a UK prize draw for Internet users would be a commercial and legal risk.
