Turkish Online Casino Crackdown

According to a report in Turkish newspaper Zaman, the Government has launched a major operation to stop online gambling and is threatening heavy fines for those caught breaking the law.

A front-page story headlined Virtual Gamblers Will Be Severely Punished appeared over the weekend and reported that Turkish police have identified some 3,500 people who regularly gamble online. The newspaper also reported that the people identified so far have played over 46,000 games online in total although it did not make clear how police arrived at this figure.

The piece stated that the majority of the online gamblers involved are allegedly from the cities of Istanbul, Izmir, Kocaeli, Sakarya, Bursa, Edirne, Duzce, Bolu, Antalya and Mersin with each offence would warranting a fine of $84 per game.
