|Finnish casino owner Poju Zabludowicz has been revealed as one of the UK Conservative Party's major financial backers.|
According to the Sunday Times newspaper, a company run by billionaire Zabludowicz donated over $140,000 in three years to David Cameron’s opposition party, which opposed plans for Britain's first super-casino earlier this year.
Based in London, 55-year-old Zabludowicz controls the investment company Tamares Group, which owns the Plaza Hotel And Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, along with other hotel and casino interests.
'There is no secret about the fact that he is a ‘nondomicile’ but he has given though his UK limited companies and it is completely above board,' said a spokesperson for the Conservative Party.
Educated in Israel, Zabludowicz is ranked as the 24th richest person in the UK, according to the Sunday Times Rich List 2007, with a personal fortune of around four billion dollars. It was reported that he is also one of the financial supporters of the Conservative Friends of Israel.
According to Electoral Commission records, Tamares provided around $30,000 for Cameron’s leadership campaign in 2005 and donated approximately $110,000 to Conservative funds in 2006 and 2007.
“It’s the company rather than him personally that gives to the Conservatives,” said a spokesman for Zabludowicz.
