Online poker player Jason Mercier has won over one million dollars at the European Poker Tour San Remo Championship after qualifying via a satellite.

To take the title in Italy and the $1,340,867 prize, the Florida native fought off competition at the final table from an impressive list of respected players including Dario Minieri and Gregory Genovese from Italy, Eric Koskas and Anthony Lelouche from France, Dag Palovic from Slovakia, William Thorson from Sweden and American Marcus Bower.

The young American dominated play on the second day of the Championship after starting from second place, eventually beating Lelouche in a heads-up challenge in less than three hours. Lelouche took home $779,215 for his second place finish followed by Minieri with $450,748 and Koskas with $351,201. Finishing in fifth spot was Genovese with $296,037 followed by Thorson with $220,833, Palovic with $175,586 and online qualifier Bower with $120,460.

“Actually, the funniest thing is I was planning on selling my San Remo seat because my friend backed out of coming three weeks before,” said Mercier.

“Two of my online friends said they were going but they weren’t going to play the event. ‘You can meet up with us’ and I thought screw it and I go. They’re very good friends now.”
