The five-year deal follows last week’s agreement by the Greek firm to acquire 51 percent of Slovenia’s Slovenske Lotterie for $4.9 million and features an automatic renewal clause.
Intralot stated that the license was granted as a result of its full compliance with the local government’s regulatory requirements following a thorough evaluation of its gaming systems.
“We are really pleased to enter the betting market of Spain by winning the license to manage Sports Betting games in the Autonomous Community of Madrid,” said Constantinos Antonopoulos, Chief Executive Officer for Intralot.
“Intralot is creating the ideal conditions so as to ensure the growth of the betting market in the area from which both the Community of Madrid, with the significant revenues expected to be gained, and the players, within the framework of responsible gaming and healthy competition, will benefit.
“We are optimistic that further autonomous communities in Spain will be attracted by the benefits and achievements expected to arise in the community of Madrid and will very soon open the sportsbetting market in their territories.”
Intralot stated that its Spanish subsidiary, Intralot Iberia, would be developing a network of dedicated venues branded Apuesta Oe! for the area’s six million people to participate in sportsbetting. It stated that it would also co-operate with existing arcades, bingo halls and casinos to establish a network of in-house points of sale.
