|Holland turned in a stunning display last night to beat World Cup Champions Italy in its opening Group C match of the Euro 2008 soccer tournament taking place in Austria and Switzerland.|
A controversial goal from Real Madrid striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy in the 26th minute began highly favoured Italy’s worst-ever defeat since the inception of the tournament in 1960. This was followed soon after by a superbly worked team goal that finished off by Wesley Sneijder before Feyenoord player Giovanni Van Bronckhorst put the Orangemen 3-0 up in the 79th minute in Berne.
Holland is now fourth favourites to reach the final on June 29 at odds as good as 13 -5 behind Germany, Portugal and Spain. Italy, on the other hand, has dropped to eighth favourite at odds of 6-1 behind Croatia, Czech Republic and France.
Dubbed the ‘Group of Death’, Group C also saw former winners France begin its tournament with a lacklustre scoreless draw against minnows Romania in Zurich. With chances at a premium, Chelsea player Nicolas Anelka had the best chance for ‘Les Blues’ in the first half but could only watch as his headed effort sailed over the bar.
Tonight sees heavily favoured Spain take on Russia in Innsbruck in the first game of Group D while defending Euro champions Greece battle Sweden in Salzburg. Spain is currently 3-4 to triumph tonight with Russia 67-14 while OddsChecker.com is offering a draw at 13-5. Greece is at odds of 41-19 to start its tournament with a win while Sweden is currently at 13-8 while a draw comes in at 21-10.
