|Tiger Woods won his 14th career major event on Monday after winning a 19-hole playoff against outsider Rocco Mediate at the US Open in South Carolina on Monday.|
Woods had forced the 18-hole playoff against Mediate on Sunday after sinking a twelve-foot birdie put on the final hole. Going into the final hole on Monday, Woods was again one shot behind but birdied the 18th to force a sudden death play-off.
Mediate was trying to become the oldest US Open champion in the 108-year history of the event but put his final tee shot in the bunker, knocked his approach off a cart path and against the bleachers, chipped some 18 feet past the hole and missed the par putt at the Torrey Pines course.
Woods only needed a two-putt par at the end to win for the third time and now joins the iconic Jack Nicklaus as the only player to capture the Grand Slam three times over. The win was even more remarkable because Woods had not played since April 15 after undergoing surgery on his left knee. However, he played through the pain over 91 holes to capture the title.
'I'm glad I'm done,' said Woods.
'I really don't feel like playing anymore. It's sore.'
Woods was listed as the 3-10 favourite with OddsChecker.com to win while Mediate was 14-5 after finishing one shot under par for the four rounds and shooting an even-par 71 for the final day with three birdies and three bogeys.
