Spain Crowned UEFA Euro 2008 Champions
By Staff
Spain last night won their first European Championship for 44 years, defeating Germany in a seemingly inevitable matchup.

The semi-final draw showed there was only one likely final lineup, and sure enough Spain and Germany took to the pitch after beating Russia and Turkey respectively to compete for the top prize.

In the 33rd minute Xavi released a penetrating through-pass and a miscalculation by German left-back Phillip Lahm allowed Torres to swiftly break through, lobbing a desperate Jens Lehmann to score the first and only goal of the match.

After half-time Michael Ballack came close to equalising for Germany, but it wasn’t good enough and unfortunately for them that was their nearest chance to get back in the game.

Spain looked to be the better side throughout the match and as pre-match favourites the outcome will come as no surprise to most.
