Millionaire soccer director sued by Vegas Casino

It’s not been a good year for Al Midani. Not only did his beloved football (soccer) team win precisely nothing last season, but the millionaire former Manchester United director is also being sued by a Las Vegas casino for $1.8 million (£1.16 million) over claims he lost it playing roulette.

Property developer Amer Al Midani is alleged to have handed over a dud check. Hotel chain Rio Corporation began a bankruptcy action against him and his attempt to keep the hearing secret was thrown out by a judge.

Victor Joffe QC, representing Rio Corporation, said: “On his first four trips he won $3,888,500. In particular, during his third and fourth trips, the debtor won $1,207,800. During his fifth trip the debtor obtained advances from the Rio totaling $3 million. He then lost the whole of that sum whilst gambling at the Rio Casino.” Joffe said about $1.8 million remained unpaid.

Al Midani, worth an estimated £20 million (US$31.5 million), was not at the hearing.
