888 Pulls Plug On Snooker Sponsorship
By Staff
In England, online gambling provider 888 has announced that it is to terminate its contract sponsoring the World Championships of snooker, held every April in the northern city of Sheffield.

888 stated that it would no longer sponsor the season's showcase event at the Crucible Theatre despite being just three years into a five-year deal. This means that the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA), the game's governing body, have a total prize money black hole of around three million dollars to plug from their own resources if replacement sponsors cannot be found.

It was a double blow for the game as Saga Insurance soon followed suit and invoked a termination clause in its contract backing the Wembley Masters tournament in London.

'Both companies have stated that the current economic climate is affecting marketing budgets in all industries and that market conditions had changed during the course of the agreements,” read a letter from the WPBSA.

'We are currently out in the marketplace, proactively contacting potential sponsors through our sponsorship agency IMG. We remain optimistic that we will find new sponsors for the World Championship and the Masters.'

Tobacco companies had backed both events since the 1970s until new Government policies outlawed their continued sponsorship.
