Team GB To Go Better in London?
By Staff
It has been their best Olympics for a century, and while the Australians may have joked that they only won medals that involved sitting on their behinds, Britain’s haul in China was impressive.

The success of Chris Hoy in the cycling and Rebecca Addlington in the pool have led bookmakers William Hill to offer 1/2 that Team GB will win 20 or more golds in 2012. If you think they will get less, you can back that at 6/4.

There are also markets available on the total number of medals the Brits will win on home soil, with bookmakers believeing they will surpass the 47 taken away from China. A tally of over fifty is the big favourite at 1/4, while more pessimistic punters can get 11/4 for the Brits to land 49 or less.

Hills reported that £25million was gambled on events in Beijing - and agree with fellow bookmakers Ladbrokes that at least double that will be fluttered in 2012.

'People who had never had a bet before were sprinting into our shops to back Team GB in the Olympics - we took bets of up to £40,000 a time,' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.
