Australia Opens Up To Online Horse And Sport Betting

Sports fans will still be able to enjoy a flutter on the Internet despite Australia’s proposed restrictions on online gambling. The federal government, under considerable pressure from horse and sports betting groups, has decided to exempt them from their proposed ban on the online gambling industry. Lotteries also escaped the ban, which labor said still remained unworkable anyway, and would force Australians to gamble on offshore-based, unregulated sites.

Merv Hill, chief executive of the Thoroughbred racing board, welcomed their exemption from the ban saying “We’re delighted the government has listened to the industry’s concerns and acted positively on them.”

Other exponents of the exemptions included Tab ltd, who process around $110 million in sports wagers online every year. Their spokesman Peter Fletcher said “It’s especially pleasing given that a blanket ban would have been extremely damaging and costly for the racing industry and our customers.”
