Betfair Signs World Snooker Agreement

British online betting exchange Betfair has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with World Snooker, the commercial arm of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, to share information on unusual wagering activity.

World Snooker has had a similar agreement with the Association of British Bookmakers since 2005 and this latest move follows revelations last week that the UK Gambling Commission is to investigate betting patterns on a Malta Cup match in which former world champion and ninth-ranked Peter Ebdon lost 5-0 to underdog Liang Wenbo.

“Entering into such agreements and establishing relationships within the betting industry is an important and necessary step for World Snooker to take and these links facilitate our gathering of information to assist in any enquiries,” said Sir Rodney Walker, Chairman for World Snooker.

“I am pleased to have been able to negotiate this additonal agreement with Betfair, which will reinforce snooker’s continued committment to preserve the integrity and transparency of our sport.”

“Betfair works closely with sporting regulators worldwide to help them maintain the integrity of their sports and ensure that competitors abide by the rules they have in place,” said Mark Davies, Managing Director of Corporate Affairs for Betfair.

“This agreement is key in allowing us to provide named information where necessary, without which regulators cannot do their jobs effectively.'
