Australia Still Unsure About Internet Gambling Ban
By staff
The Australian government is still in debate over the proposed ban on Internet gambling. The recent exemption of horseracing and sports betting from the ban still leaves the question of the future of online casinos in Australia in the balance. The question of the morality of the ban has become less of an issue as senators discuss the practicality of the ban and whether it can actually be implemented in any real manner.

Deputy Leader Senator Aden Ridgeway voiced concerns about the implementation of the ban saying, “The only issue for me is whether the bill deals with the problems of social gambling, if it doesn’t do that then I think it’s a waste of time.”

Opposition Leader Kim Beazley was openly hostile to the ban; he said, “This sort of hypocrisy ought not to be permitted, now we invite the senators to join us to defeat this legislation.”

“Online wagering at this stage is really just another alternative distribution and a convenience for our customers” said Tabcorp spokeswoman Tricia Wunch, who also said that online gaming “has quite a bit of potential in the future.”

A vote on the bill is likely to take place sometime next week.
