Wisconsin Crackdown on Slots

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Washington County officials have become so alarmed at the increasing number of commercial gambling machines popping up in public that they have asked for an ordinance giving them “...authority to issue on-the-spot citations and fines” against business owners such as tavern owners and restaurateurs who are casing in on the apparent gambling craze in the Dairy State.

A decision on the request is expected from the County Board next Monday. The ordinance would give all officers of the Sheriff’s Department and all municipal police officers the right to immediately cite those business owners who have allowed their premises to be used for commercial gambling. “More of the gambling devices are beginning to show up again,” said Sheriff Jack Theusch. “But the district attorney and the municipal chiefs of police have taken the position that we do not allow them in Washington County.” The Sheriff reportedly has warning business owners “to start removing the machines now.” “We will be doing tavern checks in the future, and we will respond to all complaints.”

The Journal Sentinel also reported that the “Sheriff's Department has removed about 20 machines from county businesses in the last three years, and all were destroyed.”
