Austrian online gambling provider Bwin Interactive Entertainment AG has signed a sponsorship deal with German professional soccer team FC Bayern Munich that circumvents current local advertising restrictions.
Last year, the Vienna-based firm was forced to terminate a deal it had signed with fellow Bundesliga club SV Werder Bremen after provisions in the State Treaty on Gaming prohibited the advertising of real-money gambling in sports.
However, this latest agreement will see the nation’s current defending champions display advertising for Bwin’s free online casino and games site at free-bwin.com during all domestic competitions for the next 20 months. In addition, the Munich-based club will promote the real-money Bwin.com domain for matches held outside Germany such as the Champions League or UEFA Cup.
'As a partner in sports, Bwin is thrilled about the cooperation with FC Bayern Munich,” said Andrea Gaudenzi, Head of International Sport Marketing for Bwin.
“As the most successful German club both at national and international level, FC Bayern Munich is the perfect partner for Bwin, the world's leading provider in the online gaming market.”
Bwin already has sponsorship deals with European soccer giants AC Milan of Italy and Real Madrid of Spain and is also fighting in court for the right to operate legally in Germany under the authority of its Gibraltar and former East German licences.
“By winning over Bwin, we have the pleasure of working with a partner who fits perfectly to FC Bayern Munich given its strong brand and focus on partnerships with leading European clubs,” said Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Chairman for FC Bayern Munich.
