Americans head to the polls today to choose their next President with the latest poll from the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion showing Barack Obama leading rival John McCain by nine percentage points nationally among likely voters.

Bookmakers also believe that the Democrat from Illinois will become the 44th President of the United States with,,, and offering odds of 1/20. Slightly shorter but nonetheless disheartening for Republicans,,, and are giving odds of 1/14 on an Obama win while is going with 1/12.

The shortest odds on a McCain win can be found with at 11/2 while and are offering 13/2. Bookies and are giving the seemingly insurmountable 7/1 while and have gone even longer with 8/1.

Americans are also selecting their Members of Congress with bookmaker offering odds of 1/100 that the Democrat party will maintain its control over the lower House of Representatives. Punters can get odds of 39/5 that it will be a hung body come tomorrow while a Republican triumph is seen as unlikely at 15/1.

Odds of 1/100 are also available from on the Democrats capturing control of the Senate. However, it would appear that the Republicans have a better chance of taking this higher legislative house with odds of 1/16 available on a tie and 3/4 on the ‘Grand Old Party’ regaining its control after two years in the minority.
