West Ham Close To Sponsorship Deal

In England, Premiership soccer team West Ham United are rumoured to be close to agreeing new sponsorship deal with Asian sportsbetting company SBOBet.com.

The new deal would replace West Ham’s previous agreement with XL, the airline that went bust in September after one year into a three-year deal reportedly worth around $3.89 million a season. Since the demise of Gatwick-based XL, the ‘Hammers’ have borne no sponsorship on their shirts after being denied permission by England’s Football Association to feature the name of the Bobby Moore Fund, a cancer charity.

According to The Times newspaper, the SBOBet.com deal will run for 18 months and be worth around $2.96 million, reflecting the depressed state of the sponsorship market.

SBOBet.com is licensed by the Philippines and a deal could be signed this week, just in time for the London-based club as it attempts to overturn a decision to award Championship side Sheffield United around $77 million in compensation. An arbitration panel ruled in September that West Ham were liable for compensation on the basis that the transfer of former player Carlos Tevez was in breach of Premiership rules. The Argentinian forward played an influential part in West Ham avoiding relegation for the 2006/07 season at the expense of Sheffield United.

West Ham finished that season three points above Sheffield United but were fined by the Premiership over the Tevez affair. The team appealed the panel’s decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, along with filing an action in the High Court.
