In the UK, the Gambling Commission has published a beginners’s guide setting out the things that players should look for when gambling online or considering whether to gamble.
The four-page What To Look Out For When Gambling Online leaflet is available on the regulator’s website at GamblingCommission.gov.uk and offers useful advice such as that players should always check whether a gambling operator is licensed by a reputable regulator.
“A gambling company that is not regulated may not be fair or safe to gamble with,” reads the guide.
“They may be operating unlawfully and there may be a risk of something going wrong when gambling. Where a gambling company says it is regulated, you can cross-check with the regulator’s website to ensure that it is licensed.”
The advice also stresses that players should check where different gambling products are regulated as numerous companies are watched over by multiple jurisdictions while various products on a single site may also be overseen by different regulators.
“For example, the betting may be regulated in Britain while the casino games are regulated in a different country,” reads the leaflet.
“You may also find that clicking on a link within one website takes you to another webpage. This may be run under a license issued by another jurisdiction and you may not even realise that the gambling activity is regulated elsewhere.”
The Commission also advised players to look for clear contact details for any company offering online gambling services before beginning to play while also making themselves aware of any complaints procedure.
“It is your responsibility to satisfy yourself that you are happy to deposit money with an online gambling company,” reads the guide.
“You should exercise the same caution when gambling online as you would when purchasing any goods or services via the Internet.”
