Aussie Gambling Addicts Encouraged to Sue
By Linda
Australian gamblers could sue gaming operators for losses caused by their addiction, a leading academic said today.

125,000 Canadians have begun a class action against lottery operator Loto-Quebec in Canada. US citizens have also filed lawsuits against gambling establishments. And Australians are being encouraged to follow suit.

Dr Doughney, a senior researcher at Victoria University, speaking at a Melbourne conference, `Disarming the Bandits’, claimed it was now proven beyond all doubt that gambling caused psychological and financial harm.

“I don't see why wouldn't begin to follow examples in Canada and the US where people with gambling problems litigate against hotels and casinos,’ Dr Doughney later told the Australian Associated Press.

Dr Doughney said problem gambling had become a health issue. The Australian Medical Association recommends that general practitioners list it as a factor when making lifestyle assessments on patients.
