|Nurses, teachers, and other low-paid professional women are increasingly turning to gambling online to supplement their wages, according to a poll released yesterday.|
Of the professions surveyed, 66 per cent of female nurses admitted they had a weekly flutter. More than 42 per cent of secretaries, and 38 per cent of teachers also said they placed bets every week.
In comparison, accountants and other female high-earners, were found to be less likely to gamble. 62 per cent of accountants said they would only place bets once a year.
Bookmakers believe the surge in the number of lower-paid professional women taking up gambling is partly due to their need to boost earnings.
One nurse, a 30-year-old from Brighton told the study that having a bet was a 'real release' and a good way to 'earn a bit of extra cash'.
Trainee midwife Victoria Davies, 25, was struggling financially and tried out an Internet casino. She ended up losing money, rather than winning it.
