LA Guv Loses Jail Bid for Gambling Extortion

A full session of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has turned down the requests made by former governor, Edwin Edwards, and his suspended state insurance chief, Jim Brown, to review their convictions for extorting money from people seeking riverboat casino licenses in the 1990s.

Brown’s plea for a review of his conviction for giving false information to the FBI, with regard to another case, was also turned down by the Court.

Edwards and Brown said they would take their cause to the U.S. Supreme Court, which agrees to hear only a small percentage of the appeals made to it.

Edwards was sentenced to a 10-year prison term for extortion, fraud, and racketeering.
