|The Associated Press reports that “Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Ryan said he would fight Mayor Richard Daley's suggestion of a modified state gambling permit to open a casino in Chicago.” Ryan is the current state Attorney General and he opposes any expansion of gambling in the state, which now allows permits for 10 riverboat casinos. Ryan suggested that, rather then modify existing law to accommodate the Chicago project, interested parties should apply for the one permit in existence, made available when the state revoked the permit for the Rosemont’s Emerald Casino in Chicago. |
Mayor Daley would like legislation that would allow the City of Chicago to own the new casino. Daley’s plan would not require that the casino be aboard a boat. The Democrat’s plan would not restrict the number of slot machines. Republican Ryan would restrict the number of slots to 1,200 maximum. “I'm not in favor of any expansion of gambling -- no sir, I'm not,” Ryan said.
