|An army chef has won £164,776 ($255,982.21) on a soccer bet with a stake of just £4 ($6.21).|
Mark Simmons won what is reckoned to be the biggest-ever payout on one soccer accumulator by predicting the winners of 18 games (for US readers, for “accumulator” read “parlay”).
As if sweating on the result of the last game wasn’t enough, the game was heading for a draw right to the wire: Manchester United's 3-0 win over Everton on Monday was heading for a 0-0 draw until the last 4 minutes of the 90.
Simmons squirmed for 86 minutes as Manchester United struggled to break the deadlock.
He stood to win nothing if the score remained at 0-0. But United scored three late goals to make Simmons almost £165,000 ($255,982.21) richer. He says he went 'absolutely ballistic'.
Simmons, who is serving with 19 Regiment Royal Artillery at Colchester Garrison in Essex, said: 'It was the longest 86 minutes of my life. I was that wound up that I couldn't even drink a drop of beer.
'I didn't know exactly how much I stood to make if United won, but I knew it was a hell of a lot of money. They were pouring forward (attacking), but didn't look like scoring.'
He placed the £4 bet at Ladbrokes in Colchester last Saturday.
Twenty-four-year-old Simmons plans to spend his winnings on a house in Darlington, County Durham, for wife Melanie and their daughter Katie, two.
