Feds Dump On Spammers
By Earl
According to a press release from RollingGoodTimes, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has exacted a settlement from two large spam operators for “deceptive earnings claims, and fictitious testimonials to sell spam e-mail lists as business opportunities.” The FTC charged that the actions of the online spam slingers violated federal law and the settlement will bar Richard Jon Scott, known online as Cyber Data, and Sonya Lockery, known online as Internet Specialists, from doing any further business online.

The FTC actions, brought both in federal courts in California and Connecticut, alleged that both spammers sold bulk email lists to customers, making the claim that customers could make easy quick money by selling products and services online. Cyber Data's spam piece boasted that its customers could expect to earn “over $10,000,000” selling a $5 product. The FTC action alleged that Internet Specialists made claims of earnings that looked like endorsements from established customers, and were not.
