|According to a message on KTLU radio, free college tuition could become a reality in the Sooner State if, as Democrats contend in this election campaign, a lottery was established in the state, with proceeds earmarked for higher education. “If we do it right, we can bring 300 million dollars into education,” said Democrat Brad Henry. “We can send every qualified Oklahoman to college or career tech, tuition free.”|
According to one unidentified expert at Tulsa Community College, free scholarships could be guaranteed for all Oklahomans who wanted them if the lottery was structured properly.
If Oklahoma were to extend this lottery online, the value of its proceeds could well exceed the value of tuition, leaving State politicians with a budget surplus after only a few years. By extending the lottery into the homes of Oklahomans, or even to their mobile telephones, take-up rates could double.
Using lottery proceeds strictly to provide free college education is a novel idea. And if the state takes a page from the Internet’s book, the prize range can extend past cash, and offer cars, holidays, and even luxury homes.
