|The Irish government could be facing a lawsuit, taken by gambling addicts over its failure to set a legal age limit at the State-owned Tote. |
The suit notes that legislation requires all on and off-course bookmakers to abide by a legal age limit of 18. However, the Tote has no such legal limit and it is alleged that it is not uncommon to see children of seven or eight placing bets at racecourses, according to Waterford-based solicitors, MW Keller.
It believes there may be an obligation on the State to remedy the situation and compensate people who have developed serious addiction because of their exposure to gambling at a young age.
