Canada Fine Makes History

The Globe and Mail newspaper reports that the Ontario Court of Justice has hit Dario Zanetti, owner of a restaurant in Montreal, with fines and forfeitures amounting to $300,000, for making between $1 million and $2 million dollars as his take in over $20,000,000 transacted in an illegal betting operation over the last five months. The punishment is the greatest in Canadian gambling history. Zanetti, the alleged “kingpin of an interprovincial sports-betting syndicate,” writes the Globe and Mail, pleaded guilty to one count of “illegal bookmaking.”

Nine other who were also accused had their charges against them then dropped. As these men left the courthouse, the newspaper reports that, “.. two of them grabbed a newspaper photographer's camera and smashed it down the stone steps of the courthouse. Another flung a full cup of coffee into the lens of a TV camera...”
