|Newsday magazine reports that twenty people have been arrested for their parts in a “gambling and loan-sharking operation” which was pulling in cash for the Bonanno organized crime family. One of those arrested is Margaret Frascone, the 83-year old mother of another suspect, Anthony Frascone, 52, allegedly a “soldier” (or hit man) for a “crew” headed by Patrick DeFilippo, 63, who in turn is allegedly a capo (captain) in the Bonanno kingdom, and who was also apprehended. Mrs. Frascone allegedly assisted in the bookkeeping end of the operation by collecting betting proceeds and passing them on to her son. |
“The suspects, who were charged in seven indictments, netted more than $2.5 million a year through a wide range of `revenue-generating criminal activity’ and face up to 25 years in prison,” said Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, who also said the gambling side of their operation made $100,000 a month in bets. The loan-sharking side took in more than a $1 million a year in “interest,” Morgenthau said.
