|Netimperative reports that Congressman John Conyers, Jr., a ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, is proposing legislation with the aim of preventing underage gambling and gambling by known problem gamblers on the Internet. Conyers’ bill would create a commission to make recommendations as to how Internet gambling could be regulated. The Congressman regards his idea as consumer friendly. |
Representative Conyers reportedly “scoffed” at previous numerous campaigns to prohibit online gambling and said such an attitude “reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of the Internet ... The international nature of the Internet has rendered ineffective federal and state statutes governing the placement of wagers,” Rep. Conyers added.
There was no indication from the Congressman that he personally had any particular recommendations to make at this time as to how online gambling by minors and problematic gamblers would be prevented.
