AltaVista Reverts to Search Engine
By Linda
AltaVista went back to basics this month, deciding it is after all just a search engine.

It tried to also be a shopping channel, an information provider and an ISP but these attempts compromised its position as a search engine.

Now instead of a vast array of links, the site displays a plain key-word search box. It is reminiscent of Google, currently the number two search site on the web. MSN is number one.

“The relaunch is all about us getting back to being the number one search site on the web,” said Kevin Eyres, general manager of Alta Vista International.

The two year battle to branch out AltaVista has lost the company millions of pounds.
