|The Associated Press reports that the City of Reno is “putting a new cleanup plan in place intended to rid the downtown casino district of drug dealers, prostitutes and chronic panhandlers.” More than three dozen initiatives were adopted by the City Council, including a rejection of licences for any new liquor stores and a ban from downtown streets for repeat panhandlers (beggars) and those who violate laws regarding the consumption of alcohol. |
It may come to pass that one or two of the measures will be deemed by some to be in violation of civil rights. But Reno is bound to clean up its act its own way. A group of retried police officers have volunteered their time to keep drug dealers from plying their trade.
Downtown Reno will also get more of a physical revamping, too. Sidewalk tiles will be replaced and downtown’s Virginia Street will be widened and Fourth Street will be changed into a divided highway, in the hopes of discouraging freelance on-street prostitution.
