|ONLINE gaming is set to become the “Killer App” driving broadband Internet in the Asia Pacific region, according to market research firm IDC. |
IDC said that broadband would grow due to falling prices, fiercer competition between ISPs, and the growth of Internet gaming in the Asia Pacific region.
Countries like South Korea have already demonstrated the link between broadband Internet growth and online gaming.
By end of this year, IDC expects more than 100 million PCs and 400 million cellular phones will be operating in the Asia Pacific region.
There would also be more than 165 million Internet users and 25 million mobile Internet users in the region by the end of 2003.
Following last year’ s slump, Asia Pacific’s IT and telecommunications industry is expected to make a turnaround, as investments in infrastructure upgrades would trickle in, IDC added.
IDC said that the Asia Pacific information and Communications technology (ICT) market is expected to grow by 11% from last year, and would be worth 81 billion dollars in 2003.
