|Tony Adams, 36, a “former England football [soccer] legend,” claims that “top football stars addicted to gambling will steal cash from their children” to finance their gambling habit, or “feign injuries”, presumably to find more time for their addiction. Adams reportedly “fears big wages are fuelling more addiction to both drinking and betting.” |
Adams retired last summer and is a former captain of UK’s soccer team, Arsenal. He said of his former colleagues: “They lose their self-respect and, before they know where they are, they are nicking money out of their kids' savings to have a bet ... More and more players are buying horses and with that comes gambling.”
Other players have not stepped forward or been uncovered possessing ghosts identical to Adam’s since his broad stroked dark portrait of UK footballers. Nonetheless, Adams has launched a charity organization, Sporting Chance, with the aim of helping sports figures to fight their addictions.
