UK Lotto For Olympics?

A spearhead committee of the British cabinet has already met, in preparation for a full cabinet meeting, on January 30, on whether or not to back a London bid to host the Olympic Games in 2012, and whether or not to recommend that Prime Minister Blair’s Labour government should then use more than £1 billion ($1.6 billion) of revenues from the National Lottery to finance the cost of hosting the Games.

The well known British entrepreneur, multi-billionaire Sir Richard Branson, long interested in running the lottery itself, has reportedly said he'd “... like to run a special Olympics Lottery game to raise the money.”

Others, though not identified by the BBC, are reportedly “more sceptical” about taking such an amount of money away from good causes which already depend on Lottery allocations. They have described the proposal as “a deceptively simple answer to the question of how to help pay for the Olympics.”

The operators of the National Lottery, Camelot, and the National Lottery Commission, which regulates the lottery, had no comment when asked what advice they have been giving cabinet ministers in recent days. However, the Culture Department is known to have been “testing all the lottery options.”
